- Saxony’s oldest coin, a 2,200-year-old Celtic gold “rainbow cup”, has been unearthed by a metal detectorist near Leipzig. This rare find provides a window into early European culture by revealing ancient trade ties between Celtic and Germanic tribes. The artifact will soon be put on display.
- The U.S. Mint has introduced its first laser-engraved coin, the 2025 American Eagle Silver Proof (1 oz), featuring a new laser-engraved privy mark. This high-tech move is a strong deterrent against the recent surge of China-made counterfeits sold on online auction platforms.
- The U.S. Mint recently launched its 2025 “American Liberty” series, including the high-relief $100 gold coin and silver medal, and the new Laser-Engraved Proof Silver Eagle. The gold coin sold 7,350 units in its first ~3 days, the silver medal sold 28,888 units, and the Laser Engraved Silver Eagle reached 59,520 sales on its first day alone.
- Ohio is considering a proposal, House Bill 206, which would establish a state currency backed by gold and silver. This electronic system aims to counter the dollar’s devaluation by linking every unit of currency spent to actual metal reserves held by the state.
- The 2025 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin, minted in West Point (W), and the Silver Medal, minted in Philadelphia (P), offer a contemporary interpretation of Liberty coins with proof finishes. The obverse, designed by Christopher Polentz, features a sunflower with a bee, symbolizing stewardship, while the reverse showcases a dynamic eagle. John P. McGraw sculpted the obverse, and Eric David Custer sculpted the reverse.
- A remarkably preserved quarter-drachma, dating back 2,200 years and depicting Queen Berenice II (c. 246–241 BCE), has been discovered during excavations at Jerusalem’s City of David. This near-pure gold coin (99.3%) is one of only approximately 20 known examples, and is the first to be found outside Egypt.
- In response to a rise in counterfeit coins, particularly China-made fakes sold on online auction platforms, the U.S. Mint has released its first laser-engraved coin. This new 2025 American Eagle Silver Proof (1 oz) features a laser-engraved privy mark, which experts view as a high-tech deterrent to counterfeiters.
- On August 21st, the 2025 Coin of the Year ceremony awarded trophies in ten categories to ten exceptional coins. Austria’s silver €20 “Supernova” took home the top honor, Coin of the Year, and was also recognized as the Most Artistic Coin.
- The National Bank of Kazakhstan has issued two new commemorative coins, a 1 oz Ag .925 silver proof (1,000 tenge) and an uncirculated 100 tenge coin, to mark the 30th anniversary of its 1995 Constitution. Struck by the National Mint in Oskemen, these coins celebrate the themes of democracy, independence, and unity.
- To commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s centenary, Canada is issuing new 2026 gold coins. These coins honor her 100th birthday (1926–2026) and her seven decades of service as Canada’s monarch.
- The discovery of the Traveller Collection, a $160 million hoard of 15,000 rare coins concealed from the Nazis during WWII for over five decades, is poised to revolutionize the field of numismatics.
- An Iron Age Celtic settlement, over 2,200 years old, has been discovered in the Czech Republic. Believed to have been a hub along ancient trade routes, the site has yielded hundreds of gold and silver coins, jewelry, and pottery. This find provides valuable insight into life in Bohemia during the Iron Age.
- Musician Rick Springfield’s collection of rare U.S. gold coins, comprising three dozen coins, will be auctioned by Stack’s Bowers from August to September. The collection, which includes rare coins minted between 1796 and 1908, showcases Springfield’s passion for American history and collectibles.
- Malta’s Central Bank recently issued a new three-coin silver proof set commemorating the Malta Railway (1883-1931). Designed by Miriam Mazzalli and Noel Galea Bason and minted by the Royal Dutch Mint, the coins feature historic steam locomotives and Malta’s coat of arms, celebrating the island’s sole train service which connected Valletta, Mdina, and Mtarfa.
